ABOUT THE MARKETING MANAGER
The Marketing Manager is a collaborator and strategic thinker with excellent communication skills and the desire to take a leading role in representing the KST mission to the public through text and visuals. The Marketing Manager supports public relations strategies and leads the social media of Kelly Strayhorn Theater, creates email marketing and web content updates, creates copy for marketing collateral, manages graphic design, supports development and fundraising activities, and leads photography and video initiatives. All efforts are aimed at achieving an exciting, inclusive environment that encourages event attendance and drives ticket revenue goals, building the organization’s diverse audience, member, and donor base, and increasing the organization’s visibility in the community.
SALARY & BENEFITS
This is a full-time, exempt salaried position and pays $50,000 a year. The salary is fixed. Please don’t apply if this salary does not fit your expectations. DIRECT REPORTS: Part Time Marketing Coordinator, Marketing Interns; Consultants: Graphic Designer, Photographers
SCHEDULE
Our typical office hours are 10:00am - 6:00pm on weekdays. During heavy programming periods and times when you need to be present at events in the evening (approx 3x per month), you can flex your schedule. This is an in-person, non-remote position, and all Kelly Strayhorn team members are vaccinated against COVID-19.
ABOUT KELLY STRAYHORN THEATER
Named after 20th-century entertainment legends and Pittsburgh natives Gene Kelly and Billy Strayhorn, Kelly Strayhorn Theater (KST) is a home for creative experimentation, community dialogue, and collective action rooted in the liberation of Black and queer people. KST takes a multidisciplinary approach to presenting contemporary performing arts while examining the questions that define and inspire us as individuals and communities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
MARKETING (70% of Role)
- Implement seasonal multi-faceted marketing strategy to increase attendance, digital engagement, and overall participation in KST programs.
- Manage short- and long-term timelines and budgets for marketing activities
- Manage all design projects with creative oversight by the Programming Director who ensures consistent brand standards and appropriate brand improvements.
- Maintain accurate and updated records of all marketing-related metrics and provide regular reporting and progress on all marketing activities
- Responsible for the production and distribution of all institutional publications; coordinating with external graphic designers, firms, and vendors (including print vendors) as needed.
- Write, edit and produce newsletters, brochures, direct marketing pieces and other printed material
- Create marketing materials for use during KST events including flyers, signage, digital programs, and pre-show slides
- Ensure the KST website is maintained and up to date
- Oversee KST’s social media presence via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other platforms; recommend new strategies based on current trends
- Fulfill marketing expectations outlined in KST venue rental contracts for rental organizations
- Make ad buys in line with annual sales and marketing plan
COMMUNICATIONS (15% of Role)
- Implement communication objectives and communication plans
- Create and determine publicity/press relations timeline to generate greater awareness for KST and support any overall marketing initiatives
- Cultivate and maintain media contacts in order to generate relevant stories, interviews, and other media coverage for KST
- Solicit, arrange and organize media interviews (print, radio, and TV) for general stories about KST and specific productions
- Write and distribute news releases, articles, calendar listings, and public service announcements (PSAs), ensuring consistency and accuracy
- Field and respond to media inquiries generated by those releases, or regarding a specific production or event
- Coordinate and oversee photo sessions for public relations and marketing purposes, including video documentation of all performances, and manage the archiving of all press clippings, video clips, radio tapes, and photo library (This requires attendance at the occasional evening and weekend event. This time can then be flexed.)
- Coordinate handling of reviewers, including contacting them, securing comp tickets, and compiling press packets
DEVELOPMENT (15% of Role)
- Work with the Development & Communications Director to create, solicit, and fulfill season sponsorship packages
- Manage the design process for development campaigns including but not limited to e-blasts, printed materials, direct mail, website, and social media
REQUIREMENTS (please don’t apply if you don’t have the following):

- Minimum three years of experience in marketing and public relations
- Working knowledge of current social media and email platforms including MailChimp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Canva.
- Excellent computer skills, including detailed knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
- Cost-conscious with a demonstrated ability to develop, administer, and work within budgets.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to positively represent the KST organization to community groups, renters, patrons, donors, and volunteers.
PREFERENCES (you should still apply even if you don’t have all of these traits):
- Arts management experience with a broad understanding of all aspects of theater.
- Experience negotiating contracts, including estimating printing costs.
