The Kelly Strayhorn Theater is a vibrant and vital multi-arts presenter positioned for continued growth.

Under the leadership of executive director, janera solomon, KST has seen significant success and growth since the launch of a new business model in 2008, building an ambitious range of quality, contemporary programming and garnering accolades as a presenter, producer and mentor of emerging artists. The Kelly Strayhorn Theater has grown from a rental house to an exciting, arts presenter. Stakeholders, including: regional funders (who have made major multi-year commitments) and patrons, donor and artists praise the organization for our dedication to diversity, community engagement and world-class performance.

The operations have grown with this success. It also faces the tests that growing, mid-sized arts organizations face, including the need to develop predictable and growing sources of revenue and ensure that management capacity is not outpaced by the demands of more ambitious programming.



The General Manager is a results oriented dynamic organizational leader motivated by the organization’s goals and objectives. The organization’s chief “cheerleader,” the GM serves as the organizational team leader directing others to ensure KST’s successful strategic performance.

The General Manager has a wide base of knowledge with a deep understanding of the business management and the nonprofit sector with a keen appreciation for the complexity of nonprofit operations and finance.

A team builder with excellent personal and interpersonal skills, the GM is an excellent manager who inspires and motivates others. The GM works closely with the Executive Director and is a partner in implementing the organization’s vision and exceeds expectations while successfully getting everyone in the organization pointed in the same direction.

The GM oversees adherence to KST policies and procedures in ways that empowers the team, and enables them to make small decisions correctly. The GM ensures that the whole team knows those decisions support an overall vision.

Operations, Facilities & Management

  • The GENERAL MANAGER monitors KST resources.
  • Knowledge of process of applying for grants and for obtaining government funding and works with the development team to ensure accurate and on-time reports.
  • Ensure KST team has the resources to complete their work successfully including IT and office needs
  • Ensure strong relationships with KST vendors, including managing bidding and contracts with vendors – telephones, waste removal, equipment leases, technology support, etc. ensuring access for MBE/WBE vendors
  • Oversee facility maintenance projects for both KST and Alloy Studios including maintenance project lists and priorities, sourcing bids, selecting vendors, and oversee completion of projects  
  • Oversee human resources functions and policies including the administration of employee benefits plans, payroll and compliance with KST HR Policies

Financial Management & Planning

The GENERAL MANAGER oversees financial and operational planning, including budgeting and financial planning. The GM works with the team to ensure that the resources required are found.

  • Tracking departmental revenue and expenses
  • Lead budget planning, forecasting for programs and initiatives
  • Preparing financial analysis based on monthly reports generated by the Bookkeeper.
  • Oversee cash controls, manage accounts payables and receivables
  • Coordinate Bookkeeper activity and review financials to anticipate financial management issues and provides recommendations to address them.
  • Works closely with ED and KST team to achieve strategic goals and objectives

KST Team

  • The GM understands the team is the most important asset of the organization. The GM works closely with KST managers and team leaders to create a framework for people in different functional disciplines to work together effectively. The GM creates an open environment in which concerns can be voiced dispassionately, and all decisions are clear and logical.
  • The GENERAL MANAGER has foresight, is attuned to the arts and culture market, with experience creating and implementing business plans for the organization that align with our strategic plans.
  • The GENERAL MANAGER represents the organization well at all times, and plays a critical role in establishing and managing strategic community partnerships.



The ideal candidate is an excellent manager with 10 years+ of business management experience. Experience in start-ups or small business preferred.  Knowledge of nonprofit finance required.

The GM is highly motivated, unflappable and exceptionally organized, with the ability to multitask, prioritize and lead teams in a fast paced environment.

Knowledge of Theatrical Procedures and Practices a plus.

Computer Skills: The GM is technically savvy and curious. A quick study, interested in and knowledge of new software or technology; or able to find technical knowledge quickly to address KST’s needs.

Starting salary commensurate with experience. This is a full time salaried position.
